The community’s been busy imagining robots prowling the land, beancan security cameras, SWAT-team shack assaults, Shia Labeouf, and more.

Welcome

The header image was plopped onto Reddit by BlueHeartBob as an example of the sort of robot battles he’d like to see in the game. Though I don’t think the robot is a particularly Rusty, the little details are: he’s captured the clothing variation with a few small (virtual) brush strokes, even keeping the little gap in the bucket helmet. I bet there’s at least one rock house hidden in there as well.

Also, please make more art, everyone.

An Even Briefer History of Rust Factions

It’s been a billion years and two haircuts since I covered the Rust Factions server. It was a Rust server that focussed heavily on role-playing between the players. As a result, its players were capable of keeping track of its history of violence between eras (wipes). It’s still going. Nikolayev dropped an album onto reddit of some of the snaps taken across the previous era. I’d embed the album, but it’s not letting me. There’s lots and lots of compounds, a temple of the glow, and a server map that looked like this.

Does this sound like somewhere you’d want to play?

There isn’t senseless raiding and killing. If you want to raid someone you need to declare war. There is a greater sense of community, and there is actual diplomacy. I guess the negative is you cant go around killing everyone for no reason, if that’s the kinda thing you like.

They have a whitelist system, but you can apply to play at the sub-reddit.

Holdacious

I thought I’d highlight some of Youtuber Holdacious’s work, because he braved Rust’s newly remade Sphere Tank. It’s a video that picks apart the newest addition to the Rust landscape, showing off all the secrets of the oil tank. As you can see, there’s probably more than you initially realised.

I also like how he leaps into new game modes. He was the first to really try out Battle Royale game-mode, and just recently he took part in a BATTLESHIP! fight on his usual haunt at the UK Wasteland server, where two ship-shaped buildings sat across from each other in the water as the people ‘onboard’ each shot at the enemy.

And there’s this one, where the rules were set-up for a SWAT-team like assault on a shack while the other team defended their leader. It’s really interesting seeing these situations playing out on Rust.

So yeah, he’s a good person to follow if you like seeing Rust hosting atypical fights.

Fortify Update

There’s a new version of pfergus’s Fortify program out. It’s a 3D base-building program that enables players to test out building ideas before committing to building them on a server. It’s a good program to help you try out a building plan without all those pesky players, resources, or rules.

Amazing work.

Beancan Camera

I spotted this on the ‘Modern Desk’s Steam Community page. He envisioned a security camera in Rust using a beancan. That is all.

Now all we need is some form of electricity to power it…

Human Farm

This is so wrong it almost circles back around to being right again. Xeon06 gamed the system of Rust to try and gain animal fat. How? By creating a sleeping bag for every player on the server inside a locked room. He even named all the bags ‘Home’.

Dark. Clever. Rust.

… and Finally

It turns out that the song about Shia Labeouf being a cannibal is also about Rust.

The only response to that.

Get In Touch

Think you’re working on something awesome? Tell me all about it. Now’s the time to share your base designs, or get into the growing Raid Cam business, or to make a lovely shirt.

There’s a dedicated forum post, or you can fish for upvotes in the Subreddit. I also shuffle around the the Steam Community, so feel free to show me to things from there. You can follow and respond to Rust on Twitter, and I’m on there as well.

I can’t respond to everything, but I read every comment and take it all in.
