A small update on Rust Factions, some great fan art, something that looks like a rain dance, and more.

Welcome

I’m not playing on the server, but reading up on the current Rust Factions Era has made me wish I had the time (not ‘having the time’ in this instance basically means a crippling Overwatch and Netflix addiction). If you don’t know, Rust Factions is a role-play heavy server that requires people to retain a sense of character while they play, and sets up plots of land for the factions to control and fight over.

The header image was almost enough to make me want to be part of it: yellowhello78 dropped it on reddit, showing off how the server’s been carved up, and looking over it dragged me into the server’s forum. There you can find Faction backstories, character bios, and entire eras of past Rust role-playing. This is the full map, though almost certainly a bit out of date. Factions take over land all the time on there.

It occurs to me that people might not have read my article on the initial server. This is from the Legacy days, but remains my favourite thing to come out of Rust.

KCmo Base Tour

I almost feel sorry for any player who comes across one of KCmo’s bases in the wild. It won’t be long before he cracks non-euclidean base design and anyone who enters comes out on another server. Until then, he has to make do with normal dimensions. In this video he shows off a base on the awesome–and now official–Rusty Moose server. It’s not just his usual proof of concept stuff: he lives in this. It’s a working, living base. I especially like the barricades stuck near rocks that would otherwise provide cover to raiders.

Of course, now you know where it is and what’s inside, you can attempt to raid it. Just don’t blame me if you end up somewhere last week or in DayZ.

Night Raid

Speaking of Rusty Moose, their resident film-make Swemba took a trip over to the Rustopia server to watch some of the action unfold. I say ‘watch’, but most of it occurred at night. I’m sharing this as it’s an interesting look at the way darkness envelops the action. As tough as it can be to follow, there’s something to be said for seeing bouts of violence being illuminated by gunfire.

That something? “Purty”.

Art or Something Like It

Another dip into the art of the Rust Steam Community, where the brush is mightier than C4.

From left to right: El Bandido’s remarkable in-game painting, ‘Paternalism Concatenation’; Ken’s cartoon of a raid; CommanderGrim’s lovely sketch of a Rust player; and finally Shedmon’s drawing of someone who clearly won’t last the night. Thanks for these. I really love them.

Vertiigo Turns?

This is pretty classic Vertiigo, and probably a rarity for one of Rust’s better known Youtubers. I remember his initial videos, where he’d infiltrate and then attempt to kill those who’d wronged him. This is like that, but doing it’s a whole lot harder when the people he’s rolling with seem to expect it. I love how he edits in earlier moments to build a story.

Gr8 stuff, m8.

… And Finally

Rebitaay spotted… something in the distance.

That right there justifies the scope.

Get In Touch

Think you’re working on something awesome? Tell me all about it. Now’s the time to share your base designs, or get into the growing Raid Cam business, or show off a game-mode from your server, or if your server has an interesting theme.

There’s a dedicated forum post, or you can fish for upvotes in the Subreddit. I also shuffle around the the Steam Community, so feel free to show me to things from there. You can follow and respond to Rust on Twitter, and I’m on there as well.

I can’t respond to everything, but I read every comment and take it all in.
