More building system work..

New Build System

I’ve seen a few people comment that they don’t understand why we’re changing the build system. They loved it, it was miles better than legacy, don’t change it, please god don’t change it. Well – you probably should have said something before because all I’ve heard is moaning.

With the new system I’m hoping we’re addressing a few issues..

  • Rust isn’t a hammering simulator. Lets face it, there was a lot of hammering in the old system. Should the payment for building something not just be the resources, do you have to pay with time too?
  • Get out of your house. With the new system stuff is more expensive, players need to go out and get resources more. Anything we can do to encourage players to explore, we should.
  • Rust isn’t a building simulator – and that’s what it was turning into.
  • The art cost was too high. Every component needed 7 different stage models (wood, wood2, stone, stone2 etc), this is a lot of art – especially when you consider that things like stairs don’t need that. The new system keeps these requirements low – while allowing for the maximum customizations.
  • It was going to look like shit. Even though there would have been a lot of art it would have still looked like shit. There’d have still only been 6 different types of wall and all the walls would have looked the same on the inside and out. We can do better than that.

The current status of the new system is that it’s in testing. It’s on the dev branch if you want to give it a try. There’s still stuff to fix, add and change, there’s broken menu items and some blocks don’t work. The stairs are slopes. I want it to be a bit more capable before I force it on everyone. In the meantime you have the option of playing on the dev branch and letting us know what’s up.

And don’t worry – we haven’t skinned/modelled them yet. These are just placeholder models and textures.

Pie Menu

Some improvements to the pie menu this week. We now have disabled items and ‘selected’ items.

You might find the pie menu a bit weird to use if you’re used to playing Battlefield and stuff. This is because the right click menus (seen on the building plan and the hammer) both need you to press the left mouse button on an item to choose it. This felt wrong to me too – but you get used to it. The issue is that sometimes you want to just open the menu to check something – like what’s selected, or what items are available. Having to left click assures that the selection is deliberate. There are other ways around this problem – like having the center circle or the outer circle as neutral zones. I found both of these options to be more error prone. It’s not set in stone – but I have tried to give audible and visual clues when the menu closes as to whether it is just closing or you selected something.

Hold USE for menu

Another feature from legacy.. if you’re looking at an item with multiple options you can quickly tap use to run the default option, or hold down use to open the menu.

Animals are faster

Andre made it so the animals move faster this week. They’re harder to catch and harder to run away from.

There’s still a lot of scope in making the AI’s behaviour more believable and fun to hunt (and be hunted) but this should fix a lot of gameplay issues for now.

Demolition

You can now demolish blocks by right clicking with the hammer. The block’s health will slowly decrease until it falls to bits. You can speed that up by bashing it with the hammer a couple of times.

Health bars + overlay

Building blocks show their health by turning darker (pr0grammer art). This is a visual indication for you to use from a distance so you can see if some of your base is knackered.

You now see a building block’s health in a health bar too. This is one of those compromises. I hope we can remove the need for it at some point – that you’ll be able to accurately predict a block’s health just by looking at it. Right now it serves the purpose of accurately showing how much (or little) damage you’re doing to a building, and to explain via bars and numbers that building blocks don’t need to be bashed, that they repair themselves slowly.

Dropped Item Removal

Dropped items now get removed after 60 seconds. This sucks and I want stuff to stay around longer. This is a server performance issue right now.

The intention is to rate the dropped items, so that a dropped rock would disappear in 60 seconds, where as a dropped gun would stick around a lot longer. We’re not doing that right now because they all use the same prefab.

Rotation

Did I mention that walls are sided? How annoying would it be to place a wall down then realise you’d placed it the wrong way around – so you had to demolish it and rebuild it the right way. That would suck.

So now you can rotate some blocks. The degree and direction or rotation depends on the block. Walls can be rotated 180 degrees, so it’s facing the opposite way. Foundations can be rotated around 90 degrees so you can align your floor texture up nice (although this texture will probably use world coords eventually so you won’t have to worry about it).

Nametags are back.. again.

We had to remove the nametags a while ago because of a bug in the Unity5 beta and UnityUI. This is all fixed – and now they’re back again.

Starving

There wasn’t a lot of dying of starvation happening considering this is a survival game. None at all in fact. Well now there is.

PVP Looting Disabled

So previously you could walk up to a player, select loot, then steal stuff from them. This is a lot of fun – and it definitely needs to exist – but right now it’s overpowered. It shouldb’t be possible to loot someone in the middle of a firefight with them and steal the gun out of their hands. There needs to be some kind of delay, or initialization time – so the other player knows what’s happening.

So yeah. It’ll come back reworked but for now it was breaking the game so had to be disabled.

Knock Knock

Guess what? Helk is back! And he wrote some code this week! You can now politely knock on doors.

Mousewheel Select

But Helk didn’t stop there! He also implemented the ability to change slots using the mousewheel!

Local Chat

Something we’ve wanted to try for a while is making the text chat local. So when you get a chat message it’s probably meant for you – instead of probably being Russians and Americans arguing over who should be on the server.

We can totally appreciate that this is a scary new thing and you hate it, so if you want to allow global swearing on your server you can just set server.globalchat to 1.

Woodpiles are gone

Haven’t we got enough sources of wood? I don’t think we need to explain this.

Performance

Performance is a joke right now, there’s no denying that. The game uses too much memory and it runs like shit most of the time. It’s not caused by grass.

Right now we’re exploring 3 avenues.

1. Terrain rendering. The terrain shaders were meant to be faster and better looking. Right now they’re definitely better looking but they’re much slower than the default option. Diogo is adding some shader LODs to ease this off a but – but it’s looking likely that we’ll have to end up finding a compromise here to get the game back up to speed.

2. Trees. We’re suffering a lot with the performance of trees. We think we’ll get a big performance benefit if we include the trees internally as part of Unity’s terrain system because it does a bunch of batching and automatic LOD handling. Andre is experimenting with that now. If it goes ahead we’re somewhat limited by it – because right now in Unity if you want to update one of these trees you have to update them all.. which means if you knock a tree down we have to update the entire system of 30,000 trees. This is taking about 300ms in our tests – which is a noticeable hitch – but might be worth it.

3. Physics. Tied somewhat to the tree issue. Some of the trees right now have about 10 colliders. Some of the rocks have 500 polygon collision meshes. There’s 30,000 trees – 10,000 rocks. We have no idea how this is affecting performance on the client or the server. Whether this is responsible for the massive memory usage, whether it’s generating a lot of CPU usage. This is something we’re looking into.

So sorry, yes, we know. We’re doing stuff, we’ll talk about it more from now on.

Chicken

Goosey made and animated the chicken model..

He even made an alternate skin..

Headlight Concepts

Paul made some headlight concepts. Vote for which you like best.

Summary

A busy old week. Feel like we made lots of progress towards getting a build system that works.

Next week some big code refactoring so the other programmers can understand it, performance++, sleepingbag++ and hopefully a massive building system addition.

If you could put in a map, or a compass, or something that resembles DIRECTION… That’d be great, mkay?
Also. SERIOUS FPS DROPS MUST BE FIXED. The game is not playable at 10 fps. I spent the last 45 minutes in the Official server in Washington and hoping it would just go away. .. No, it didn’t.

    ALSO!
Griefers are everywhere barricading sleepers inside their bases, upgrading the walls to lvl4 and leaving the players with no method of getting out other than suicide. When we claim a land, it shouldn’t be able to be built upon by some asshat with a trolling demeanor. Sure, it’s Rust… But goddamnit, I paid money for this to be entertaining, not to be a headache.

I just want loot boxes, I know they are coming… but I hope they come sooner not later.  Starting the game with the ability to make everything sucks.  Leaves you bored and wondering why even make this a pvp at all (in it’s current state).

1- Gimme tha Loot, Gimme tha Loot … in my best BiggieSmalls Voice
2- Take away my blue prints, I dont want to begin a server like a God
3- if you REEEALLY want to see some Rust style havoc.  Keep those tool cabinets to prevent builders… but have LOOT ONLY items to help you scale enemy walls like ladders, or stairs.  NOT as building materials but just as items.  The item versions break down as soon as you put them up… hammering repairs them, but they will continuously break down.  So for example: lets just say the “portable stairs” raid item breaks down in 5 minutes… but if you have a teammate hammering away every minute or so to extend the time, this gives you enough time to climb up, place more stairs, set C4 and get inside.  but if you fail, the “portable stairs” just break down on their own… This starts and promotes teamwork/panic/exploration/fun, also helps server/ game performance because these raid items are temporary… once raid is complete the items will break down in bout 5-10 mins.

But this only works when our beloved loot boxes are back, and we get some real Rust-like action back in the game of people fighting for stuff. lol

Thank You Garry and the rest of the Rust team for listening to your customers!  I have been playing on the dev servers to test out the new building system and it is so so so  much better.  I find myself constantly trying to gather more resources to upgrade my base causing me to travel farther and explore more which in turn is helping me get familiar with the map around me as well.  This is a huge success in my book feels so much closer to legacy which was amazing.  Cant wait to see what comes next.

TheRealBlankers ChaiVat You’ve got to be kidding me if you honestly think the game has been in development for too long. Please do some research on computer games development before you comment.
Most games have a very long development cycle, averaging out at 4-5 years a piece.
The only reason you think 2 years is a long time, is because games that aren’t early access are only announced when they are nearing the end of the development process, most commonly 1 year from release.

Can’t play the game still, still freezes at loading screen “Receiving Data” Isn’t this something you’d want to fix? Does anyone have a fix for this? It’s been over a month. I just want to play, I don’t care about all the other glitches. The game is going great, just want to actually be able to play it.

STOP LISTNING TO THIS NONSENS TALK GO BACK TO MINECRAFT IF YOU WANT BUILDING SIMULATOR PLEASE, ok ok some of your points are valid but experimental building system vs legacy building, the legacy wins by miles that system was fun as shit, a hard to get house , but when u finally get it u could lock down and area and have serious impact on the game very fun

  33.
      Secondlife

BruBoss Yeah Performance is an issue they know about. I’m sure it will be fixed by main launch. My game runs exactly like yours. Super smooth and then suddenly a spike. If I alt tab out and back it fixes it. I’m not too worried. Experiemental doesn’t have this problem so I know its just the Dev branch.

Totally agree with you on the base but I think on the Dev its more really ‘testing’ stuff then really gameplay. I mentioned the same thing that I feel ‘warm and cozy’ in my base.

  34.
      BruBoss

DanielDerStolle Those r not bad ideas but .. did U imagine how much time they (Devs) spend to implement those. I personaly think this is a main mistake to implement new and again new things without finished existing issues.. and I dont want to transform Rust to Minecraft, it must be own way of gameplay. Again FPS and LOOT must be main accent and Thx for new building system its very nice and ergonomic i must say.

  35.
      DanielDerStolle

It yould be cool if there are more Playable Features in the Game. Current it is like “Mine Some Wood and Stones, Kill some Animals and Buidl your Base” but what next? There are no things to do!
My List what would be nice to see inGame…
    1. A System where you can Build some Railroad (Steel and Stone or Wood) to create a Railpart. Then Creat a Mine Waggon or a little Steampunk Lokomotive like Rust-Art and some Waggons for Ressources or People (Friends) to drive with. With this “Train” you can Drive to a Mine where you can Mine some other Ressources like Coal, Gold etc. (Like Minecraft? ^^) <- It would be nice…

    2. Agriculture things… Make the Earth fruitful to planting some Eatable things like Wheat, Corn etc. to make a nice Bread in the Furnace :D

    3. Some Features to make little Cars, Boats etc. (No Futuristic Vehicles)

    4. My most important point: A Official Dedicated-Server (without using the SteamCMD)!

At the current Time i think ever that you turn around then there are no really progress… Thats bad!

  36.
      ChuckoMay

BruBoss Yea we need loot.  These past few months we have been spoiled.  We can build everything right as soon as we log into a server.  I am hoping soon those loot boxes are added and they take away like half our blue prints.  Even if all they got are Wolf statues and Dishes… Id take 4 or five boxes right there.  It would force people to kill and search for something.  Fighting over items, or finding an item and being scared the whole way back home, or ending up in a gun fight with something valuable you dont want to loose, or ending up talking your way out of a gun fight because you know you will loose something good all was an amazing thing from Legacy.

  37.
      BruBoss

I switch to DEV branch already a weak or more from main cuz I was boring and nothing to do more. I want to test it and know whats going on. So .. Dev guys, ur smart and pro, but do U have a plan cuz its most importantand I know U have which must contain main aim and i hope that is we – the player base who byu this game, without it all things could go wrong. Sorry but looks U guys doing everything but not concentrated on main things. Excuse for my english and im not pro and coding master but let me suggest sth, 1st things 1st:

    1. Performance – if we often face with low FPS on our mid systems, we cant play and enjoy the game, so we will switch in the best case back to Legacy or even worse to other products in the market. Im playing on lowest settings, my system is tweak as much as i can, on dev branch and overall its OK, around 50-80 fps, in some areas its drops dramatacly to 5-10 without any tree around and other environment. I know those good fps r due to the server is low populated and rare buldings player made. So .. if ppl cant play the game on desent fps they left it.

    2. Gameplay – if I cut trees, mine some resources and kill few animals, I made good base even unraidable at this moment, made all weaps and armor .. what next, stay in a base and enjoy the view around me or i can go to travel and look for other players to kill them or raid their base to get what – more wood and metal frags or bones, Im full of those, I dont need more of those. Maybe I can improve the view of my base and it even bigger .. maybe. I want to say that U can take that gameplay at least partial from Legacy. Make things not that easy to made, made those more expensive or even better difficult to get via blueprints and airdrops from crates, animals or in specific areas. That all force me to do sth, made risky movements or steal from others. This is good gameplay I enjoy in Legacy and I will stay here.

    3. Ohter things .. building system is OK and i dont faced with difficulties to build nice and safe base. Building parts looks also OK, those r not main thing at this moment and I dont need some headlight or a chicken, even fishes cuz I have wolf meat. That all is nice to meet in the game but overall i can play without them at this moment.

So .. that was my point of view and dont take it too close if U dont like it! ;)

    Best regards
    Your BB

  38.
      JohnnyD1

Instead of choosing 1 concept, wouldn’t it be cooler if everytime we crafted something we’d get a random design? It would create a market of more and less valuable items with different skins, so players who can “afford” the item in game, will look more technologically advanced and what not. This goes for most items, not just headlights.

  39.
      Spencer_Gooch

5 is the best, it seems the most practical, but still realistically achievable with the resources available to the player.

  40.
      socalseano

an amalgam of headlight #3 and #2 would be awesome….

  41.
      Rusty Cakes

I like all of them but the thing that really needs to be shown in this game (and its getting there) is having something feel home made. In Legacy when I made an m4 it looked like I would never be able to make that from scratch, but the feeling of broken bent metal and cloth wrapping around a bolt gun to hold it together made it even more home made. So keep it up Garry and don’t stop what you’re doing!

      Game of Stones

Seeing the devs working on this game constantly, I get excited at the beginning of each week wondering what awesome new things will be added.  Seriously, you guys are doing great and I cant wait for future updates!  Ty for making this legendary game in the making, and keep up the momentum of work! <3

The new build system reduces lag like crazy. Excellent improvement. However, the textures used are ridiculously WRONG. Window sills would never look like birch bark in a place with no birch trees, let alone the fact birch bark is just paper (more or less). Should be raw wood roughcut wood. Walls will never be painted green nor cut so perfectly. This is a game about surviving a wold-event. People wont have access to table saw, electricity to run joiners and routing tables.
Realistically halved logs placed like planks would make more sense side-to-side. Outside-facing side grimy bark, inside-facing being raw rough-cut lumber.
The ceiling and foundation textures is another point. When does foundations made from wood look like granite?
Great improvement but you should leave texturing of wood panel to someone who doesn’t just google-image search random textures and says “oh, this looks pretty”.
Talk to a survivalist or google off-grid camp building for ideas on how the materials actually look.
Another comment about this system that I wish to make is that the faster animals are AWESOME. Much more realistic this way. I also love the work you have done on the trees itself with the latest update we are all running now. It works great.. but.. in some areas that have large expanses with visible forests, work needs done to reduce FPS drops. 5fps is not playable and regardless of this being an alpha game we are paying for, 5fps is not acceptable in any release stage. Please spend a lot of time on the back-end and smooth this out more, especially for us server owners. Paying $250 to self-host one of the top 3 experimental servers is not fun when we spend more time deleting objects to reduce lag than interacting with people experiencing problems and playing it, ourselves.

We also need more moderator tools… it sucks right now trying to keep objects cleaned and trees cleaned. Sure, we rely on plugins like oxide, but that’s just more resources being needed to run this server. Would be more productive to have most of these tools available right out of the box and properly integrated to manage users/structures/trees/etc much more effectively.

“the things they put down will start degrading pretty quickly pretty fast.”
This is brilliant. A perfect compromise between the old and new systems.

I think that you should add both 2 and 5for the headlamp models. I think it would be cool to have both. My thinking is that maybe model 2 would be a lot easier to craft (both faster and less resources needed), wouldn’t be as bright as model 5, and you would slowly take a tiny bit of damage over time while using it (like 1 damage every few minutes). Get it, because it the hot wax would be burning your scalp? Just an idea. For model 5 I say that it should be more resource-heavy, light a bigger radius (or be brighter), but also would take longer to craft. Also with model 2 you could have it where it’s a one use item. Once you start burning it you can stop it, but you can’t reignite it, you would have to craft another one. For model 5 you could have it where you can turn off, take off, and turn back on/put back on the lamp/hat. Just have it set on a timer so say after 15 minutes of use, or any reasonable number, the lap breaks, maybe with a glass shattering sound of something. Just my thoughts, I’m sure I’ll be happy with whatever you choose to do, you’ve done pretty good so far Garry, keep it up. :)

JesusDiedInLasVegas loooool how long u build this? 1 year? very nice

  59.
      Secondlife

Ok here is my opinion, whether it matters or not lol.

    1. I Vote 5.

    2. I LOVED the building in Experimental and the way the Textures looked on all the walls, doors etc.  So I was sad to see how Blah they were in Developmental. There was nothing more heart pumping then being able to hear someone outside my base and seeing them thru the small crack in the wall. Right now everything is so flat, so I hope that will make its return.  I’m actually starting to enjoy the PIE menu in Developmental more and more (Though I wish they would make the graphics more organic looking). RUST is supposed to be a very Raw experience and the PIE Menu’s look just totally takes me out of my experience when I bring it up.  I know you said this isn’t a BUILDING game but you’re putting so much time and effort into the system I kinda feel like you’re contradicting yourself. Everyone loves customization and making a bad ass base that LOOKS bad ass.

    3. The CUPBOARD. I’m a BIG fan of this though I definitely think it could be tweaked.  One thing I got a kick out of, were people who took the time to figure out a way to get into my base in Experimental. If they did and got my crap more power to them. They deserved. it. This new system, right now I feel like once i get my lower base and walls up to the highest Tier, i’m basically safe. Sure they can break down the walls but most people like to get in and out as fast as possible. And if i’m there forget it. They’ll just move on.
SO…an option that popped into my head was, what if the cupboard didn’t just put up a NO building AOE but actually anyone who isn’t authorized and tried to build, the things they put down will start degrading pretty quickly pretty fast. Basically they’ll have to really plan out how they are going to get in and out because the crap they put down won’t stay very long. If not that, then maybe after a set time, the crap they put down disappears so that atleast people can’t grief by blocking doors etc. Just a thought.

    4. Digging the up in mats for building but think the time should still be longer to build. Maybe instead of having to hit the wall only a couple times to make it go, that if you want it to lvl up quickly you have to keep hitting it.  People who don’t want to sit and wait, then they risk the wall hitting max hp slower. People who are willing to sit out and hammer it up, then they are rewarded for it. Again this goes back to #2 but I think people come into RUST to have that 2nd place to hang out…like most MMO’s etc. It’s very social and the more customization/personalization available the longer people will stick around.

    just my 2 cents :D

-the animals they are not moving or attacking you.

And maby u need to add more animals in different biome’s

Please add: Foxes, Jackals, Coyotes, Mountain Goats, Squirrels, Raccoons, Badgers, Beavers, Vultures, Hawks, Eagles, Seagulls, and various fish; specifically including Salmon, Trout, and Bass.

Timocin In Unity you use an option called Mass trees, you specify how many trees you want to place and click generate and they’re all placed. trying to place them in separate zones is too challenging. Because then you would start having multiples of everything, like audio listener, colliders and wind zones, this will generates more resources on the game and lag for some people.

Vote for 3, its in style of Rust.
Building system I think is OK .. just turn on your brains and U dont lose your staff every 10 mins, even more I build base which is unraidable – this is mine 1st base in this branch and is big like lighthouse but U could made it just 3 floor big and unraidable – maybe its good but maybe it isnt. Compare to Legacy here is a lot of possibilities to shape of your base.
Overall the new dev update is good .. 1 thing I dont like is boring after I get everything, all is too easy – too easy to made weaps, ammo and armor, no blueprints and crates to search for rare items, too easy to get metal fragmenrts, im full of metal ores, wood and stones r in balance at this moment so ..
.. Good work guys and keep it up just not 1 more year pls! ;)

I vote you put the fucking building back where it is supposed to be.
Rust isn’t a hammering simulator. Lets face it, there was a lot of hammering in the old system. Should the payment for building something not just be the resources, do you have to pay with time too?
Yes it should.  You shouldn’t be able to build a fuckin super power just by getting the resources for it. It should take time.Get out of your house. With the new system stuff is more expensive, players need to go out and get resources more. Anything we can do to encourage players to explore, we should.
Why the fuck do we get out of our house to get resources? It’s to get resources so we can build a bigger and better base so we can be protected from other bandits and provide a safe haven.Rust isn’t a building simulator – and that’s what it was turning into.
No, but it puts some fucking appreciation for all the work you do when you’re not losing your shit every 10 minutes to raiders. The art cost was too high. Every component needed 7 different stage models (wood, wood2, stone, stone2 etc), this is a lot of art – especially when you consider that things like stairs don’t need that. The new system keeps these requirements low – while allowing for the maximum customizations.
I don’t know what this means. You mean there would be textures? You mean you’re too lazy to make 14 textures? It was going to look like shit. Even though there would have been a lot of art it would have still looked like shit. There’d have still only been 6 different types of wall and all the walls would have looked the same on the inside and out. We can do better than that.
I don’t understand. I’ve seen a lot of bases that looked pretty fucking amazing. Maybe with a little bit of work it could’ve been made to look better like adding more decorative items.

Now the damn building system is back to squares unless you plan on adding that shit later.

    Sick of squares.

  83.
      camcarlin789

I thought the old system was a fine one, It made sense it was realistic, however much time you spent hammering was about how protected you were, I understand that art cost may be too high but damn I guess i expected too much from you guys… It was going to look like shit. Even though there would have been a lot of art it would have still looked like shit. There’d have still only been 6 different types of wall and all the walls would have looked the same on the inside and out. We can do better than that.
Well i hope your new solution allows for maximum customization despite “art cost” and has more than 6 different types of walls, because 6 types of the same sized building are going to really look like shit…

  84.
      ChuckoMay

MagicMonk a way to test it all out is use the dev branch.  you have to change the games properties in steam to the dev version of the game

  85.
      ChuckoMay

AoS_Nexus The building system was spammy… people build like 5 walls in such tight areas in all directions to avoid break ins.  Then people complain about performance issues.  I like the NEW system WAY better.  The way the walls look are temporary… LMAO… I find it stupid that I would even have to mention that the flat building parts are temporary.  You should feel ashamed of yourself for even bringing that up, do some thinking.  Of course they will look better soon.  The Cost increase is awesome.  This isnt minecraft where you can build a mansion in 5 minutes. Go do some work, chop down some trees, explore the land for resources like in legacy.  The hammering is awesome, you dont have to hammer all day on all your walls.  The code locks work better, the menus are faster and less clumsy. I cant wait until spikes are added.

All n All, stop bitching.  This is a good direction to move in.  The only missing to make this great is the obvious… make the parts look better, and make it so a jerk with a hatchet cant break through my walls… explosive only for metal, and hours to break stone Id say would be cool.  And since that tool bench thing blocks people from building close by… there should definitely be items you can build of find to help scale people’s homes like ladders, portable stairs, etc… this will avoid building griefs, but also allow some good raids to still happen.

  86.
      galibaha

AoS_Nexus i did some testing too. and you know what ? i agree with you. the building system was fine they just needed to make it faster to build so (less hammering) and increase the cost a bit so people would gather more.

    code locks should work too
there has to be a version of a wall where it cant be destroyed by any tool except explosives

and your point #1 where if you have a friend his name is always showing is absolutely BRILLIANT !!!! in that case you can actually find your friends in this HUGE map. please suggest this in the suggestions area and ill vote for it and many people will im pretty sure.

the only reason im here commenting and reading comments and following the devblogs is because we played rust and we loved rust and we want more out of a great game.

  87.
      AoS_Nexus

I’ve tested this update with de dev part of the game on steam, the ONLY cool thing is that the animals can move again…

The building system sux, its buged, i couldn’t upgrade my own roof, but my foundations and my walls yes. Why? The cost is too high. Your character, the gloves, the campfire and some other stuff are now with a shiny glossy texture, that’s just horrible.
What is the point of the pillars if they are not used to avoid someone to build near your home like in legacy? All the houses are flat and horrible now, and the codelock have no longer a light indicator so sometimes you forget to lock it and… you know the story.. AH!! and it unlock itself too…
The starving system is ~50% good…
The names in the game is a big joke, you can’t see it because its almost invisible and you see it ONLY if you are near (3m) of another dude…
Why you don’t make a simple system like that :
1- you have the dude in front of you in your friend list > his name is displayed evrytime evrywhere..etc
2- you don’t know the dude in front of you (not on steam friend list) > his name is displayed ONLY when you point it with your crosshair and disapear when he is too far (so we can make stealth attacks)
Is it too hard to do ingame?? guys?!
..and WTF is the point to do another Rust (exp) if you take some stuff from the old version?? (leg) srsly!! if you want us to go back to your old alpha game, ban all the hackers and its ok, but for now, just keep doing updates like that and i’ll go play another “survival” game…
So i hope this update is a kind of “beta update” and it’ll be never released on the actual Rust version on steam…

To be honest I think the torch and lamplight are primitive enough portable sources of light. ChaiVat The Devblog seems like they are saying that the “stairs” may actually become stairs at some point. Plus complaining gets nobody anywhere. Constructive criticism is the way to go my friend :) I do agree that some of the stuff is kind of clunky though. But hey its just in the early stages of becoming a game give it time and im sure it will become much less “clunky”.

  109.
      TheRealBlankers

Hey i know this is probably out of the question, but what if this game had a single player option. no story needed or anything like that but just a survive the world. Another idea is to implement some sort of life, human life(a better version than just empty shells of buildings with nothing to them). Such as small towns or just an area here and there that allows people to talk and trade items though it may be a little more work with having to make some sort of worth for everything. A third idea that i have is just a deeper method of exploration like things such as caves or adding more life to the abandoned houses and towns. With things like more realistic houses not just an empty building. Just adding some sort of “wow somebody used to live here and have a life” feel to the areas in the game. Finally I want to say that i’m loving the game its a pretty good experience all around and I love that you guys are keeping us well informed :)

  111.
      ChaiVat

Since this newest update, I have to force log out the client.  So, when I hit disconnect, then “Quit”, the game just hangs and then I have to force the game client.  Also, what’s up with building stairs?  It’s been changed to an ugly ramp that doesn’t even reach the point at which I am trying to connect.  There are only 8 “community” servers and the best ping rate I can find is over 100+…where are all the other servers?  Can’t make stone doors anymore?  “Spiked floor” to place around the perimeter of your house…yet there are no spikes…it’s just a flay foundation.  “Bear trap…does it work?  This “cabinet”, or “cupboard”…with such a clunky, large item, why not allow us to at least place tools or something in it?  Kind of a large item for only protecting land claims…Very strange game so far…seems like the updates either move the game backwards or add useless items and features.  Just my 2 cents.

  112.

Hello guys, I know you said Rust isn’t a build simulator but, i’m on a RolePlay server, and I was thinking that it would be great if you could add a roof block like a wall in diagonal

Rust is not build simulator, SO:
it will be great if you change Doorway and Window_opening just to Door and Windows.
You will put Door/Windows just on the usual Wall. KEEP IT SIMPLE. As in the Sims, lol.

Morhaq thegamingeng I have the game LiF:YO but it is very much a different game to Rust and yes it requires huge amounts of time to do things in. I’m not suggesting to make gameplay slow, carts could carry huge amounts of resources so would carry enough to build a small house.

InfusedNZ And it is awesome… goto the Dev Branch (access it in steam by going to properties).  The new-old system helps performance because it stops people like myself from spamming walls for protection, but it also stop you from protecting yourself by spamming walls for protection.
I hope to Go’… I mean to I hope to Garry that they bring back explosives and make stone walls almost impossible to break thru, while making metal walls impossible to break thru without explosives.  And bring back loot so I dont start with every single blue print.  This would get people away from their homes more.  No one wants to leave to far from home if their home is always in constant danger, and no one needs to leave far away from home if they know how to build everything already from fresh spawn.

Looking good, although I have to say I don’t see how the circular selection menus are any more efficient.  The only issue with the legacy list was that it only displayed like 10 things at once and you had to scroll to get to everything, easy solution to that is multiple vertical lists.

Circular thing looks nice and clean when it’s only showing a few items, now add every item from Legacy to that list and it’s cluttered.

Also, fix the damn Receiving Data bug, you have some “freelancer” collecting info about it after nothings been done for months now, lets go already.

5 and 6 are the most appealing of the head light concepts and the others are just silly and impractical…..Imagine hot wax melting your eye balls while wearing a candle on your head…..If option 2 was chose then the wax should distort your vision until you were capable of constructing a No.4,5, or six model.

Well please then enlighten me on which cultures used to put wax candles on thier bare head and lite them? The only culture that comes close were some vikings and they would attach thier valuables to their bodies like gold coins with wax before a fight. But only idiots would burn a wax candle on top of their head.

  217.
      knotzi

FrankTenpenny  I love 2 and I agree with you there buuuut I don’t understand how 5 and 6 are more realistic.  They are cavemen who bash peoples’ heads in with their rock.  They also lack a foundry to create molded metal castings to create the lamps you see in 5 and 6.  So TLDR #2 makes sense when dealing with cavemen.

  218.

I vote for headlight #2, because who dosn’t want burning wax on their head?

  219.
      knotzi

    GT4tube  trust you? FUCK YOU!!!

  220.
      knotzi

Leignheart  this isn’t a culture of ipad wielding savants dude.  It’s full of barbaric, ruthless cavemen who still pillage and forage for meat.  I’m pretty sure they don’t give 2 shits if there is wax on their heads.  I’m sure Garry, with his experience and scheme to make the game interesting and have depth, he’s going to add more than just one headlamp.  Just like he added more than just one metal helmet.  The game has diversity. Shoosh up for a sec.

  221.
      knotzi

iWERTSQ  no shit lol that’s what they’re doing.

  222.
      knotzi

Raider160  No dude, 2 is awesome and completely realistic.  Rustopians aren’t going to care if there is wax on their head, in fact they would find it very convenient and would save cloth.  I personally love 2 and it’d be awesome to implement.
    Source: Rustopian for 700+ hours.

  223.
      OPTICAL_KRINEX

3,5 and 6. three of them are realistic and cool. the number 3 is more easier to make and the 5 is a bit expensive and the 6 is more expensive. do it that way.

  224.
      Nokrath

    Hey Guys,

first of all I want to say that you that you are doing great work both developing and communicating with the community. Keep on doing it like this and I keep on playing and advertising! ;)

Some time ago you added those spike walls to legacy. At about that time you spoke of eventually adding traps to the game. I hope it is still something that is on your roadmap, because it would be great to secure the base with something like that.

  225.
      Raider160

    – Number 5 on the headlamp thing, number 2 is a joke I hope.

    – Performance, yes grass IS a factor. About a 10 -15 fps change moving from comparable terrain grass field (no trees close by) to desert on Nvidia 560Ti, Intel Gen 2 i7, 8 gb ram. I have had low end machine user complain that their fps was at <10 and asking what to do, I suggested a move to desert or snow. They then report an improvement.

I think Frostbitten is onto something, random (very difficult) NPC mobs would help keep interest when server pop is low.

I also sense that this is a post nuclear apocalyptic era with the radiation. Perhaps a random location mini nuclear/chemical/biological detonation that in some cases causes building loss as well as loss of life at ground zero with a tapper off radius. And then a residual effect after that. This could also help clear unused structures over time. Make the graphics amazing!

  226.
      DmitryBadmaev

rust is unplayable realise update please

  227.
      iWERTSQ

If you want to make the game better, just fix that FPS issue. I can’t play! I have a very good computer but i get very low FPS. Rust is laggier than ever.

  228.
      rektor

After you make the game more stable, you guys should make forests larger and more interesting, like the game’s concept art.

  229.
      Leignheart

Headlight 5 and 6. And seriously with number 2, who the hell would just burn a candle on top of their head? Garry maybe instead of just picking one type, why not have a few types of headlamps to make, for diversity. That’s what the game could benefit from is diversity.

As much as the hammering kind of added to the survival part, as in you had to try and survive just to build a place it did get time consuming. I was skeptical about the new building system but things look great so I can’t complain about it.  If there were a giant chicken though it would kind of make sense since, there is nuclear radiation and such, maybe if animals venture into radiation they get sick too and if someone eats them that person becomes sick? Just a thought.

Rulfer reatkom MAPATOK This is what he said: “The most normal is number 5! ……. (Well, or at least number 4). The rest of them are ridiculous, but still pose a threat to health. Not very nice when running away from a wolf, and your face is dripping with wax hahahahahahaha.” Although I do agree with Rulfer, English is, in the eyes of the corporate world, highly more relevant than Russian because it is highly used to communicate for international trade and affairs. Chinese officials are required to speak English, especially since a huge trade partner of they’res in the United States.

My vote is on 5. Please make inventory a priority too. It’s very hard to select 60 wood out of 4865…

The future update now on dev server will change most of rust gameplay, whether this is a good change i cant tell yet but so far…
    I love:
The upcoming additions (spikes, fireplace, window bars etc)

     I like:
    Builing method/wall placement
    Faster animals
Toolbox (not being able to build on others)
The balance between gathering and building (because of increased resource requirements for building)

    Not sure about:
Removing the ability to build at all around, maybe ladders could be implemented
Raiding will be impossible when you cant build to reach sky houses/towers (everyone with half a brain will be doing it, i know i will)
Only 2 wall tiers? I think a metal one should be implemented, the stone isnt strong enough (either way it’ll take ages to gether the rescources necessary to build a tier 3 house if you need 100-200 metal/wall)

Being chased by animals for ages, even through water (but i guess thats planned to change with AI)
    Food for thought

  275.

Headlight 6 looks the most handcrafted but with real thought and ingenuity put into it. I do however think that having different ‘grades’ or qualities of every piece of equipment is a really good idea to put into the game like how the stone hatchet replaces a rock and a hatchet replaces the stone hatchet – as you progress in the game, you produce better quality items. This might be something to think about down the line.

I think you also really need to think about implementing backpacks into this game as well as realistic resource gathering. Its quite unbelievable that you can walk around with enough resources on your naked body to be able to build a whole house… By implementing backpacks you limit what people might be able to loot from other bases they are invading as well as towns/ which might be implemented at a later date. In terms of resource gathering, you could build a cart or wheelbarrow which you would then fill up with resources to transport around – making for a much more realistic mechanic than the current inventory system.

  276.
      DarkVillain

Hobyah They have said before that they are exploring if this is possible (so they will implement it when its doabl)

  277.
      hqtitan

Headlight 2 and 6 pretty awesome.

  278.
      Hobyah

I think it was a good idea that you got rid of the woodpiles – you’re right, there’s enough wood about.

But isn’t there also enough stone/rock around, without needing to have discrete ‘mineable’ rocks?

I think it would be a great idea if existing, procedually generated rocks had veins of sulfur/metal or whatnot, and you can tap them using an axe. Having discrete mineable rocks just doesn’t make sense; no more than having discrete woodpiles does.

  279.

james_0434 Morhaq  I don’t mean to sound like a dick so angry aggressive responses aren’t necessary. Legacy still exists. If you enjoyed that experience it’s still out there. I have no idea how long they are going to work on this game, or whether or not it will eventually have that same rust spirit some of us loved, but on the bright side there is a perfectly fun (albeit somewhat incomplete) legacy version that is still out there. I do feel like they are trying to make the best game that they can ( what ever that ends up being). I bought this game for 20 bucks and I have definitely had a big return in entertainment. Everything that is happening now is just extra awesome for me. Now I didn’t do a bunch of research before I bought Rust, so I didn’t have any preconceptions about what the devs were promising. So, I guess my point is… That for having no Idea what I was getting myself into when I bought Rust, falling in love with something that felt fresh and raw in the gaming world and then watching it evolve into whatever it is going to be has been a real treat.

  286.
      bhblacky821

hi garry.. is terrain forming an option? it would  be awesome to dig a hole into a mountain and build a house inside it.
it would also be great by buildings at some places when the terrain get cut out the needed square to build the foundation
    -> house at mountain
-> house at rock formations with seamless transition

I like #6, and for the build system I’m on the fence. I liked the previous way of building but not the way people spent hours in there house, it was hard to break in. Also this is to all you people saying c4 only to break in, that is the stupidest thing I have ever herd! I’m a carpenter and I would only ever need basic hand tools to get into each and every one of you’r houses.

    Great work guys! Really!
#2 is HILARIOUS and so isn’t the giant chicken (which is obviously a joke too)
#5 looks the best and would look the best in your game.
I think the new circular menu thing looks really nice, I enjoy the looks of it a lot.
And the new building system looks cool, I felt like I spent constant hours wacking away with a hammer to get a decent base.
Kept up the good work guys, Rust is the shit!

Garry what I think is legacy had some good game mechanics in it primarily the UI.and the Rad towns aswell as the blueprints. they were perfect I’m glad you are going with the Hold to view other options again. I think that was a great mechanic. it was simple and easy to use.

    Very good progress guys :D

im glad you are returning to the legacy gameplay mechanics cause they where honestly the reason ppl bought the game to begin with (most ppl)

But there are still to things to get some fighting going in rust

    1 Resource scarcity

Just overall reduce resource gain to force ppl out, maybe make a system that spawns resources dependent on player populatio

    2 Level 5 & 6 Walls

Should only be destroyable for the gameplays sake ! no more standing around all the time hammering, you have get out there and farm. and the explosives to blow up lvl 5 & 6 walls should ofc be super hard to obtain

    bonus

When these are done please implement blueprints back and make ppl only start with the very basics just like in legacy as i always say :b

and some hotspots where blueprints drop :)

also idea for a biome : nuclear bomb crater

  315.
      Morhaq

RasmusFink Morhaq You;ve missed my point a little bit, I DONT want it to be easy, its nice beeing constructive, but we are lacking survival mechanics and interactions atm, and those points (hopefully) should bring this game closer to this point. I mainly focused on the player freedom, as the patch is a drawback.

  316.
      ChuckoMay

Dont cry, try put the Dev Branch… it is actually fun.  I mean, it’s impossible to Rock a deer/pig to death since rocks have 0 reach and you just bounce off the animal you case.  That’s cool tho, there are other weapons to use.  Wolves and Bears are scarey again.  Building is still fun.

I still dont like that I begin the game with ALL blue prints. I can make anything.  We need those Loot Boxes added, and remove some of my blue prints.  Being able to build a bolt action and a metal chest plate from the beginning is the REAL reason why people dont leave their homes.  They dont need to find any loot when you can just mine resources and build it all yourself.
AWESOME WORK!  RUST IS THE BEST!!!

  317.
      RasmusFink

Morhaq Lol go back to minecraft omg rust is surviving not some architect simulator, the legacy system was great and good fun for tactical survival gameplay not some the sims 1 person shooter combo, it should be hard to get a house in rust not easy

  318.
      almarsaint

Morhaq Your points are all correct.

What a pitty, just when I thought they were going the right way with the game, they’re turning it into a crippled freak because they don’t want to be creative anymore and really show skill in their development work.

  319.
      Maddogs10

2 and 3 are kind of terrible concepts as you cant really burn a candle on your head as it would burn your skin and hurt like hell. It could also probably kill you, this game still needs some realism.

    5 is the best

  334.
      MordecaiWalfish

2 is definitely best for the headlight concept, lol.  It really depends on how silly you want to get with rust though.  For a more practical one, I like 5. Having both with varying light levels (dimmer light with the candle helmet, brighter with the powered one) would be the best, I think.

  335.
      Morhaq

Oh, I forgot to add something to the point 4. And the raiding mechanics which makes a house unraidable when someones inside.

There were some ideas about making some kind of bombs (C4 in old rust was a failure, I know you guys know it) that are really big, hard to craft, and preferably crafted at the spot – thats one way to do it.
Siege mechanics – I know its not the perfect idea but at least its worth a try – so people can decide. Catapults/Trebuchets and ofc Sleeping Bad respawn limitations (thats a must) – also sieage dmg/mechanics will somehow prevent the wall from beeing on-the-go which will force the owner of the house to go to the balcony and shoot those happy guys out and not die to many times before he clears them

  336.
      Litterbox

thisaccountisforporn Litterbox Neither of those things are passive actions. I equip food, I interact with the food to consume it, I gain the benefits of having eaten food. I place a campfire on the ground, I interact with the camp fire, I light the campfire. These are both active actions, which occupy your attention while you perform them.
Fending off an attack from somebody trying to wrestle a weapon from your hands would require you to invest at least some small amount of attention, and I would argue that whatever attention you would invest in would be worth keeping your weapon in your hands, and not in your mugger’s. Alternatively, if you disagree, you can opt-out of the struggle to keep you weapons yours, and focus your attentions instead on theoretical threats looming in the shadows waiting for you to make a mistake: like prioritizing potential threats from mystery-men over actual threats prying weapons out of your hands at that given moment.

  337.
      MitchellGiberson

Morhaq If I was a developer, I would take your suggestions 110%.

  338.
      Litterboxisright

    thisaccountisforporn Litterbox
I agree with Litterbox, the ‘mini-game’ idea is great, an animation in-game would be really neat, like both of them grappling each other or something, so that if you are wandering with a friend, he can kill the mugger whilst the ‘mini-game’ is happening. And it’s sort of like the counter-knifing in BF4, instead of just *bloop*, there goes your bolt, it’s oh shit, I better react before this man gets the upperhand! Thisaccountisforporn is probably a troll anyways.. (obviously..)

  339.
      james_0434

Morhaq You deserve a medal. As each update comes out I feel like the game is straying too far away from what it used to be. I miss the old days of rust when all my friends and I would stay up at night for hours to prepare for a raid or to fend off enemies from our base. The game just doesn’t feel like it used to…

  340.

      thisaccountisforporn

Morhaq I agree with a good bit of your points, mostly the stupid wiggle the pie menu makes.  It makes you sick after a while.

  342.
      Morhaq

Im sorry Garry but the new building system takes us our freedom, You cant place walls where you want to or railings etc. thats what hurts me the most.
You should rollback to the previous system, it would work great with the Tool Cupboard, eliminating glitchers, but cupboard overall is a bad idea, taking freedom again. Ill make my points 1 by 1 to make everything clear

    1. New building system takes freedom, as walls need to be placed at specific pre-destined locations – same goes with other elements
     WHY/IDEAS:
One of the huge advantages of the game was making huge customizable constructs, cities and other amazing things (You know that, just look at the community updates) Also buildings were looking really good back then. WHY ARE YOU GOING BACK TO LEGACY! IT”S THE WRONG WAY! and it looked as shit.

    2. Cupboard takes player freedom, I think it should be removed or re-designed to work some other way.
    WHY/IDEAS:
I know it protects us from glitchers and griefers, but things like glitches should be fixed IN THE CODE not by adding an item like that. I know you can make it happen Garry. The second thing is  griefers, you should first implement some basic ways to PROTECT your home, in previous builds if you were smart enough you could protect against that also – So look at the people how they protect against that and implement some parts/builds/mechanics based on their ideas.

    3. The Wheel – It’s really nice for selecting building elements and actions – but it should be more clear for the user to operate in the wheel so he will know what hes looking for and what is he selecting.
    WHY/IDEAS:
When u roll around the options on the construct wheel it makes epileptic animation (wiggle or something) that pisses me off.
another thing, it will be more useful in the future if you guys will implement more interaction with the world, for now it changes nothing in particular, just misleads the player. The menu is not clear, the icons should be bigger with colors preferably, as it adds the taste to the game, not some sci-fi grey aesthetics

    4. upgrading/de-grading mechanics is a pain and is totally unnatural, walls upgrading by themselves? what is wrong with you? I know its nice to not hammer things down for 20 mins, but its not the way to do it  – IT REALLY NEEDS TO FEEL NATURAL
    WHY/IDEAS:
As you are in the house you could always defend yourself by repairing the walls etc. it is the same now, I think that should be changed – so again – add defense mechanics instead of hammering down the walls while raiders hatchet it.
Option 1: Make the upgrade an instant action when you hammer it down – feels more natural.
Option 2!!!!!!!: insta-destroying walls shouldn’t be an option, every house in the real life is really hard to re-design – the frame system was nice as you could first see that will be the effect before building it, also walls that destroy when u order them to, what a stupid idea. You failed to build it properly, you would do it better next time. its not hard to build another house or anything. If the house is not used for a long time, it should rot/grow plants on it, ruin degrade at a slow rate, reaalllyyy slow rate (AND VISIBLE OFC). but we should be able to see if the house wasn’t used for few RL days. until it collapses (20 RL days) leaving ruble or something like that which can be scavenged for resources. That would add a real nice feel to the game.
Option 3:  Make tools for faster, more efficient building upgrading – that would solve it.

    5. textures – I know, i know – its in development and it wont look as it looks now but for the record – it looks disgusting compared to your previous project.

    6. food/starvation – If you punish the player for not eating thats OK, I think thats a good change, but first implement some WAYS to feed the player except hunting animals!
    WHY/IDEAS:
You got the fishing rod ready, make it happen!
Many people want you to implement crops/farming system, thats a good idea – and it will add more survival taste to the game (IT’S A REALLY GOOD IDEA). It will also add trading/social interactions and teamwork which accomplished gives You huge satisfaction in rust. We need some rewards for creating a community in this harsh world, which exceeds your closest friends, instead it rewards people for beeing friendly and helps them create communities, as for now its ONLY raiding and chit chatting with people.
Interacting with things like cactus would be a nice way to get some food also.

    7.  Overall this update made the game unfriendly for me, and its the first update I want to complain on. I think thats all, thanks for your time :)

  343.
      ModernGlitch

Number 2 is hilarious, but 5 is the best.

  344.
      thisaccountisforporn

Litterbox I understand there is significance in a two second act such as lighting a fire and eating but you aren’t realizing you only gave examples of passive actions. I click the button and *poof* its done.  If I have to mash a button over and over its an active action that will make not notice the incoming enemies, etc.

  345.
      Dub16Times

You said you’re not making a building simulator and your solution is to add walls we have to manually rotate to achieve optimum feng shui? Your dev team is like a highschool student that can’t decide what topic to do his paper on so he jumps back and forth between his options and doesn’t get anything done for three months.

  346.
      Litterbox

thisaccountisforporn Litterbox You eat in two seconds, you light a camp-fire in two seconds. Just because it’s brief, doesn’t mean it lacks significance.

  347.
      thisaccountisforporn

Litterbox So someone should code something up that only lasts 2 seconds. LOL.  Whats the point of the mini-game if doesn’t even last long enough for you to now it even happened.

  348.
      DamienRideout

    5 is best

  349.
      thisaccountisforporn

GradinarOFF jordanlang2 What you said was far from an opinion.  It reads more like the mindless dribble of a dumbass.  Oh wait you are.  NVM.

  350.
      Litterbox

thisaccountisforporn Litterbox You say that like there isn’t a real-world threat of being attacked, or otherwise stuck in a grapple with one person, while some other opportunistic person decides to swoop in and take you both out. Nobody said the ‘mini-game’ has to last more than a second or two.

  351.
      thisaccountisforporn

Litterbox What so someone else can just come and find two idiots in a tug of war and just kill both of them?  Terrible idea to have mini games going on when other people in the area aren’t locked out.  Either way your idea is poorly thought through.

  352.
      AaronMorris

Garry Newman duffman03 The dev branch building system is the right one. It felt like a clicking sim with the leveling of each piece of your house in the old version. Now if you would kindly start working on the melee, gunplay, and slow down the character movement we could officially move from legacy to Nurust! Thanks for keeping us informed constantly. Making a game seems like a pain in the ass and you guys have been pretty transparent about the entire ordeal.

  353.

  355.
      mooeena

Number 2 is hilarious, but I think I like 3 better.

  356.
      AaronMorris

bigsha Totally agree. The PVP dynamic should be changed and they need to slow down movement speed drastically and make the melee and gunplay fun like it was in legacy. I think then people will take Rust seriously like they used to. Also completely agree with a hitbox but doesnt seem were going to get that based on previous comments garrys made in the past about the mesh collider which kinda sucks IMO. It is really unfortunate that it took this long to figure out the the building system was a pile of garbage, and to take all that time just to revert back to the old system with a few minor additions. I have faith that Rust will be fun again, but i hope they dont go through an identity crisis and lose the genre to H1Z1.

  357.
      Litterbox

“It shouldb’t be possible to loot someone in the middle of a firefight with them and steal the gun out of their hands”

That is literally the best use of looting in the game. How much of a bad-ass do you feel like when you run up on some decked-out rifle-dude, dodging all of his shots along the way before disarming him, leaving him completely terrified now that the tables have turned?

Looting in PVP needs to remain a thing. It is such a cool feature, and makes melee so much more dangerous than just “Look out, he has a rock and he’s not afraid to click the left mouse button over and over again!” So many FPS games have so little to offer in the way of options for melee, and by allowing for stealing, it allowed players to make dangerous, but highly lucrative gambles in a fight. Owning a gun shouldn’t be a guarantee that you’ll get to keep it, and I shouldn’t have to kill you to take it. Being able to disarm a threat, and render them harmless is such a great option in Rust.

If anything, it just needs to be more obvious to the victim that he’s getting burgled. For misc items in their inventory, maybe provide a very subtle indicator on the HUD telling them they’re being robbed. If you’re trying to steal the stuff he’s currently wearing / wielding, have a sort of tug-of-war over it Both people are locked into a little ‘mini-game’ where you have to pull, or mash a button to try to keep/take the weapon / armor. Winner knocks back the loser and maybe staggers them (prevents them from just immediately trying to rob you again, locking you into endless tug-of-wars) and gives the winner a brief chance to execute, or talk down their mugger.

  358.
      rusty_naked_guy

When building a metal building, would it make sense to have to do this on the outside walls rather than inside?  So there is the option of reinforcement but at the risk of being ambushed while you are doing it.

  361.
      jakobvidal

This game is great and all, but i think you guys should focus on polishing up whats in the game now rather than adding more limitations to the player. It is hard for people to test out a game when both the world around them AND the glitches that occur from development can lead to a quick and extremely setback-full death. I’m not saying make the players invincible, but maybe you could add some sort of feature test server mode, where players can get the hang of playing the game rather than just being thrown in and expected to live.

And for those of you interested, we have set up a town of about ten people and next to the town is a Colosseum where we battle to the death using various weaponry. We’re under Multiplay *S.W.A.T.* Gaming so if you’re interested in a friendly battle just pop on by! We also intend to keep this going with every patch.

On the facepunch forum, some were saying that it was kinda cool to hear people working on their houses – exploring through the Rust map and knowing people were at work (or if you were a raider, you could follow your ears ;)

What you could do, is say it takes 6 – 20 min for the walls to upgrade themselves – what if – if you hammered them – they upgraded at the same speed as previously? So you could have the option to not have to hammer, but if you did, they upgraded faster?

Already tried out on the dev branch, and I love the improvements. Love the faster animals, love the mouse-wheel select.

Another idea – in the pie-select menu, what if you had the mouse wheel be able to select through them? I immediately tried to do that when checking out the pie menu. I think that would be very intuitive.

    Great updates this week!

griffinsclaw I actually agree that framing was a great way to judge large building projects. Particularly when you’re dealing with elevation, something that looks flat could be unusable over 16 or even 20 frames. I’d love some sort of “planning stage,” even if it was a totally different tool that expended its own resources (like paper, for example).

      CitizenVII

Jabba  CitizenVII Garry Newman Well, I know from personal experience that sometimes a project you think is going to take only a day or two can stretch out to weeks easily. Also keep in mind that they are using a game engine that is ALSO in development. Sometimes you make a change and then something around you changes and throws everything off again. I mean, I’m not saying that there aren’t long-standing bugs, even game-breaking ones occasionally. But I have way more tolerance for this kind of thing from a developer who’s been open about the dev process (and only sold the game for $20 with the understanding that being part of the dev process was part of the experience) than somebody like Ubisoft who has a record of awful PC games that just happens to be capped currently by AC: Unity (a $60 game that’s suppose to be “done” and had a team of hundreds working on it).

Garry: one of the 2 biggest complaints people had were the key system and the fact that walls can be destroyed. You fixed the first one but can you tell us anything about the 2nd? Are you guys thinking about it at all, or will it stay the way it is?

  401.
      Barbequer

Garry Newman Is it maybe possible to add a show nametag convar for serverowners? I kinda liked the paranoia the namelessness brought to the game. It also made me and my friends experiment with outfits to use to identify eachother with. Especially when player customisation comes in it would be cool to recognize people by look instead of names.

Good changes this week. Regarding building system it really sucks if you want to build a larger than 2x2x1 base  and have to sweat your balls  when some bandits run around hatcheting down ur fresh lvl 2 walls ( because sound of placing a frame is out of balance and its the second thing after bolt rifle that u can hear the loudest ). Also good idea with disabling looting and looking into performance.

I would suggest to take a look at balance melee weapons damage and range, as well as player hitbox and reducing movement speed. I’m pretty sure many people who play in experimental find current melee combat somewhat hard to master and understand. Feels like a lot of random clicking and the outcome of the fight is more ‘rng’ than skill based

its hard to explain but of if devs tried fighting each other with spears im sure you’d understand what needs to be changed.

P.S.  2nd headlight all the way.

I’ve seen a few people comment that they don’t understand why we’re changing the build system. They loved it, it was miles better than legacy, don’t change it, please god don’t change it. Well – you probably should have said something before because all I’ve heard is moaning.
the Problem is you didnt asked us the comunity

I greatly enjoy option 2 for the headlamps, or 3 if you need to be at least a little bit realistic.
The new building system sounds cool!
Personally, I would be happy to deal with rocks having sphere colliders for a bit if that means I can play properly until you figure out a better fix. Doesn’t matter how good the game is if I can’t play it properly, you know?

should just have ditched Unity and went with UE4, way better rendering, shader handling, performance, BP or C++ or both set up. Its just an engine Unity can’t compete with. But non-the-less, good progress gents.

Cant connect to any rust experimental servers, just waits a bit then says status-disconnected, is it something to do with my rust version being different to the rust servers versions?

  410.
      articman78567

Garry Newman na Haze2K1 is right
i thought about it too its will take a LONG time to complete the game development (at least until 2016 no joke)

im not goin to play this game until you balance this game and optimize it and fix the performance
about the balance.. you can build a house that took you 5hrs to build it and make every thing lvl 5 then a guy with a rock can come to ur house and rip u up(theres no way you will not get robbed after disconnecting the server)
and the performance.. bro bro bro bro we’re reading a book. its ruining all the game experience to play on 5fps on the game and hear ur computer making a noises like a factory (and i got a high end computer)

    but overall goodjob

    headlight-
I think all concept weapons and clothes should be added. All of them, but only because of the item system that was proposed before.
I don’t think you appreciate steam users greed for cosmetics, having 100 items with almost no difference other than appearance will be a great step forward in making players addicted to rust.
This does also had a sense of realism in my opinion, the idea that these ‘survivors’ are inventing unique ways to cope. Some people where smart enough to hook up a lantern to their head, that dude over there just melted a candle to his dome.
It’s adding even more work to this heavy load, but the final product guys, the final product.

      griffinsclaw

my 2 cents with the building system is that I like the direction you’re taking it, but I think it’s a mistake to skip the frame stage, at least until you have better tools in place to handle elevation changes. The great thing with frames is that when I was building walls to my cities, I could place a long stretch of frames, see how it was going to work, and then fill them in when I was satisfied. If I wasn’t, I could hit them each once and try again, having only spent a few resources per frame so it wasn’t a huge deal. With the current system, if I’m unsatisfied with my placement, I have already spent thousands of wood I’m not getting back, and since they’ve been upgrading while I’m working, I’m looking at a good 30 seconds per item to tear them down. In my case, the attempt to make rust not a hammering simulator has backfired with the new system, and rather just made it more frustrating

  419.
      Jabba

CitizenVII Jabba  Garry Newman ok, true dat :) but then i would like to know how many are working on their bugs ? mI think 1 person maximum

  420.
      CitizenVII

Jabba  CitizenVII Garry Newman Consider my Jenga analogy. Consider also that Facepunch is made up of a number of different people. Some of them are programmers working on systems, others are working with interfaces, and some of them are artists. No matter how much you might want, and artist isn’t going to fix a wall-glitch or framerate bug. So why wouldn’t they work on changing the look of a weapon? That is their job and what they’re supposed to be doing.

  421.
      spamenigma

Haze2K1 Yes, and its a lot better than it used to be imo.. but ok then go play something else, do whatever you want.. I’m just suggesting although I’m as impatient as the next guy to play this in reality there’s no rush! especially in favour of striving to get it right rather than get released!

  422.
      Jabba

CitizenVII Jabba  Garry Newman I am aware that reporting a bug is not the same as fixing a bug. and i kow that fixing a bug might take some time. But adding other things to the game also takes time.. and when yo have these bugs in the game that is really making the game alot worse, what would you do ? would you use time on fixing the bugs that is pretty much destroying the fun in playing ? or would you but the bug fixes aside and change the lok on a door keythingy ? or change the look of a weapon ? i mean i wuld deffinately use time on fixing the bugs.. New stuff is always great in a game, but not fixing such bugs is worse more bad than adding new stuff is good…

      Haze2K1

spamenigma “Go Play Legacy” isn’t an option seeing as how legacy is full of HACKERS, have you even played legacy these past few months?

  426.
      CitizenVII

Jabba  Garry Newman See my above post on “reporting bugs” vs. “fixing bugs.” Also keep in mind that a video game like Rust isn’t a Lego set. You can’t always just pull one bad brick out and swap it for a different one. Programming a complex system like this is a lot more like playing Jenga.

  427.
      CitizenVII

Jabba  CitizenVII Garry Newman Obviously, we all agree on that. What you don’t understand is the difficulty of “fix it!” or the reason for having release vs. dev branches. “Reporting a bug” doesn’t mean “fixing a bug.” Things are difficult and take time. This isn’t just a matter of changing an option from “broken” to “not broken.” I’m a programmer myself, and I just work with database systems. Those are complex enough, and usually only have five or six users in them at a time.

I guess all I’m trying to say is that, knowing a bit of what the behinds-the-scenes world of development is, Garry and Facepunch are doing an absolutely amazing job and I have every faith in them. Their devotion to transparency alone is to be applauded, and the fact they let us come on here and whine about stuff. Believe me, if my customers did that all the time, I would look for new customers.

  428.
      spamenigma

Haze2K1 I meant in-game… either way its still alpha, its still experimental.. some things are still being tried out to decide to keep, tweak, adapt or replace.. its called development! you’re just along for the ride.. if impatient go play legacy. I’d prefer them to make good informed decisions and take their time to get us the f’ing brilliant game this is shaping up to be! Again, enjoy the ride! :)

  429.
      RaulVictorQueiroz

There should definetly be the Headlamp 5. Not ’cause it’s the most beautiful one, it’s the more realistic. I’ve seen you guys’ve done a lotta good work this week, keep up this way and let’s see what happens. Sometimes I wonder, if i could go to the future, the first thing i would do would be to update my Rust client and see what had changed since the last time. Later, Garry!

  430.
      Haze2K1

spamenigma It says “Play Rust” when I attempt to launch the game.

  431.
      Jabba

Garry Newman Jabba and by the way, i have earlier reported some bugs, that wasnt fixed untill long after.. so its not that people need to report stuff, its the way you priotize it :/ but your game, u do as u want. im just playing something else  :)

  432.
      Jabba

CitizenVII Jabba  Garry Newman no idea what you mean soken like a non developer. i aint a developer, thats true. i a user, and i not one thing.. using bugged things is never fun.. if there is a fix for it, why keep it “hidden” ? why not release it and make people happy that at least some of the bugs are gone ?

Its super annoying that people can look inside ur house thru foundations, jump on a railing, and stand inside a house with half the body up on the next floor being able to loot everything thats there.. such bugs is making rust shitty to play. if this got ficed it would be alot better… all im saying..

  433.
      spamenigma

  439.
      Barbequer

Garry Newman Why not limit the building not authed players can do to lvl 1 buildings with minimal health? Griefing won’t be a problem, and people can still raid. And it’s not very hard to build a house thats safe on the top as well!
Also while you are working on the building system… please please please add floor hatches!

  440.
      spamenigma

Haze2K1  So? That’s what experimental means.. experiment.. see how it works out and adjust.. enjoy the ride!!

The new building system is amazing Garry. Had a quick bash on experimental last night and its looking to be one of the best building systems ive seen in a game. As always well done to you and the team. Keep up the amazing work.

Headlamp 5! I’ve already posted on reddit before hoping for these headlamps so I’m happy as a clam now!
As another game suggestion: Add duct tape to lootcrates in the future. This could be one of the materials required for the rad suit. Also you could mod your weapon or your helmet with a light by just taping a flashlight to it. Adding special resources like these would add some incentive to look for and fight over loot crates while not being a completely mandatory thing to get!

  451.
      AronKoch

Garry Newman AronKoch ok sorry my first language is german i try it better now  i dont like it cause there is no fun  to  build a house with only placing the parts i want to  build them on my own hands like before  its ok  if you want to force the Players to go more out of the houses  but  pls not  with this . when the airdrops, lootchest ect.  are released then  the most Players will go out

It seems like things are getting done, then scrapped & revamped, rinse/repeat – It honestly feels like the development takes 2 steps forward, then 1 step back.

I haven’t noticed any features chipped off the Baseline category on Trello in quite some time.

At this rate, baseline won’t even be reached until late 1Q of 2015.

The other art are awesome but I think number two really represent the spirit of rust.

  457.
      deleted_67262655_ChickenNugget

Randomly generated maps are shit. Players are to spread out and there is no cool places to meet up or have pvp hot zones. I played the new rust a bit and it sucks shit, if I could get a re fund I would. The pvp sucks, the building system gets progressively worse and it’s hard to find players. Please make it optional for servers to have a standard map like “rust island 2013” it’s ashamed that this game could be so good and it was actually very good in legacy it just needed a few more features eg. Different looking guns for other player bcos all guns would look like an m4 or shotgun or 9mill and maybe a few new textures. I would rather play the legacy version any day over this new piece of shit, in my mind and many other peoples it isn’t even rust anymore too much has been changed and it is not fun at all. All you do is hit shit, make a base, hit more shit, wait 2 minutes to get a gun, shoot animals, then get killed because some guy with a rock just runs up and kills You. This game is boring please Make it closer to legacy or at least host

Does the addition of two-sided walls mean that we’re going to be able to put ladders on the insides of our houses? Because that would be amazing for those of us who like building mazes. Making a truly 3d maze would be a blast.

Garry Newman AronKoch Not sure how any of this makes your house “unraidable.” It certainly makes it less griefable, and I’m down with that.

  469.
      Garry Newman

duffman03 This is true, and that’s what the old system was favoured towards. You can still build collaboratively – there’s just a lot less work involved in building now. You can work together to do resource runs etc.

  470.
      PreacherFAP

We’re running a RUST server.. How do we make it run the dev branch version of the game? Instead of the “normal” one.

  471.
      Garry Newman

AronKoch If you can make your house unraidable it sounds like the build system is awesome – but the raiding system is shit? But I guess if we fix the raiding system it’s still shit anyway because it’s just a playing a game on the computer simulator.

  472.
      Garry Newman

Jabba Why don’t you try the dev branch and check whether all these bugs are fixed, then if they’re not report them?

  473.
      duffman03

I prefer the new build system(the idea of it at least since I have yet to try it). I think the primary benefit to placing wireframes down while building is collaboration. One(or more) person could act as the architect and design the structure in advance, will others could contribute by hammering or bringing back resources.

  474.
      Jabba

But did you try and fix any of the bugs ? so as not being able to see buildings sometimes, so u can walk where a house is supposed to be, log out and back in – voila u are standing inside the house… so many bug ways to get into houses, look thru foundations, loot thru it.. no matter what u add to the game its not gonna get more playable untill you fix these things. its fukn annoying with all the bugs. game looks great but its being trashed by the many bugs :/ sux. yo should fix those and then add mroe stuff.. not the other say. weird priority
