True Detective remade using Rust, the Rust Olympics, how to build an emerald castle, and more.

Welcome

So, the header is a still from dearsomeone’s Rust-based remake of the True Detective intro. I watched it over and over again, amazed at how well he captured the sequence’s atmosphere and shots with the game. I don’t quite understand how someone can see Rust and turn it into this, but that’s why I’m posting these and not making them.

He made it for Cuda87’s oddshot compilation, which is also worth watching.

Rust Olympics

People playing in Rust–but not actually playing it–can be a wonderful thing, and it’s something Holdacious has always been good at. This is the second installment of his Rust Olympics series, which is a yearly competition of challenges with a Rust theme.

There’s so much great stuff in here: the custom buildings, the complex game-modes that still use vanilla Rust (water bucket filling, archery, wall-destroying, and more). Everyone involved is clearly having a blast, and I can guarantee you will if you watch it. They even fight it out on the podium.

I think Brad from the Rust Zone needs to join Holdacious in the commentary booth next year. His knowledge bombs really added to the event. Speaking of him.

The Rust Zone

Time for more Rust Zone.

You are the light at the end of every update, Brad.

Coloured Lighting

This is a really interesting experiment by GrymThor, one of my favourite Rust builders. His goal here was to create an Emerald Castle in Rust, and he achieved that effect with a combination of lighting and coloured paintings.

Over 500 lights, 200 XL Canvas Frames, 300 wooden signs and over 100,000 low grade fuel, all hand painted and loaded up with fuel, no oxide mods just a vanilla server with the stability turned off, and no minions. Seriously I need minions, took me two days to do on my own, the building itself didn’t take long it was the painting and filling up the lights that took far too long.

And here’s how he did both. Can you imagine how odd this would look on a normal Rust server?

The Castle.

The Lighting.

He also filmed the finished castle, but his rig isn’t quite up to showing it off, so I’m linking rather than embedding it.

Raid Cam

It feels like a while since I’ve watched a Phaedo 82 Raid Cam, so I popped into his channel and came away with this. As always with Phaedo82, it’s more than just a view into an attack on a base: he watches a pre-raid attack on a single building and watching the large group overcome the single female character in her base affected him greatly. Have a look.

It’s probably worth building a large base on Rustopia just in case Phaedo82 is floating through the server looking for trouble.

… And Finally

I quite liked Defeyed Gamer’s montage that dissolves between Rust’s lowest and highest graphical settings. Skip to about 40 seconds in to get past the many, many intros.

It’s a very good way of comparing and contrasting. Well done.

Get In Touch

Think you’re working on something awesome? Tell me all about it. Now’s the time to share your base designs, or get into the growing Raid Cam business, or show off a game-mode from your server, or if your server has an interesting theme.

There’s a dedicated forum post, or you can fish for upvotes in the Subreddit. I also shuffle around the the Steam Community, so feel free to show me to things from there. You can follow and respond to Rust on Twitter, and I’m on there as well.

I can’t respond to everything, but I read every comment and take it all in.
